Казалось бы, самый обыкновенный рабочий день. Поужинал я в ПХ, собираюсь ехать домой. Настроение резко улучшилось, как это обычно со мной бывает после плотной еды. Иду к выходу, а там... Если кто не помнит, в Пузатой Хате две створки двери, которые открываются и внутрь и наружу. Но народ почему-то любит юзать всего одну. Так и сегодня: штук шесть офисных зомби неторопливо просачиваются к выходу, основательно игнорируя вторую дверь. Естественно, я не могу это так оставить - обгоняю их, с криком "Нонконформизм!" открываю вторую дверь и выхожу. How to definitely get rid of Firefox lag in a couple of minutes
Every long-time Firefox user knows that our favorite browser tends to become sluggish with time. Browser startup takes longer, memory footprint gets fatter and so on. The most annoying thing is lag on responding to user actions. For example, you click to switch to another tab, or start to type some text into the search bar. And then you notice absolutely nothing happens for a couple of seconds before FF reacts to your input. I guess you are frustrated with this too, why else would you read this post after all. So, how to speed Firefox up? Many advices can be found on the web: disable/remove unnecessary add-ons (or even all of them by starting FF in safe mode), clean browsing history, use an SQLite compacter to cleanup the database etc. I used to try such "solutions" for quite some time, only to find they bring little to no performance improvements. My case is worsened by very long Firefox lifetime, some 2 or 3 years of heavy use. Performance is hurt not by time itself, but by countless version updates of the browser and extensions. I guess the updates somehow mess up files and databases that FF uses, leaving more and more trash left from previous versions. This means the only effective remedy for lag is a complete reinstall. But what about my data, one might ask. Bookmarks, saved passwords, extensions and other stuff just cannot be recreated from scratch in "a couple of minutes", as the post heading reads. Well, this is certainly true, but the good news is there is no need to do this from scratch! You can use a cool thing called Browser synchronizer to transfer your data between different browsers/computers. How does it work? First, you register an account and select which data to sync. This can include your bookmarks, saved passwords, extensions, browser history and even open tabs. Then, on each change of this data the synchronizer sends update to its server. And finally, on browser start it applies any changes on the server that happened while this browser was not running. An important question is security, especially when saved passwords are concerned. No need to worry about this because all data on the servers is encrypted and protected by your synchronizer password. Unfortunately, this also means that if you lose that password, you can no longer access your synchronized data. So, choose a password you won't forget ;) Back to the point. If you're not using a synchronizer yet, I'd recommend the one bundled with FF, it's called Firefox Sync. Alternatively, you can use a third-party extension such as Xmarks. The decision on what to sync is up to you, but here's a few tips. Bookmarks and saved passwords are absolutely a must. Open tabs should also be okay to sync, unless you have hundreds of them in the old browser :) On the contrary, you better not sync browsing history if you want to get a really fast and responsive Firefox after reinstall. One thing the synchronizer won't help you with is your installed extensions. You will have to install them manually, except for the ones you don't really need, which is another source of speedup. Or, if you are absolutely sure you cannot live without all your precious extensions, there is another extension to backup/restore them, it's called FEBE. So, you have backed up and synchronized all your data and are ready to erase your old fat Firefox. Do not forget to remove ~/.mozilla folder if you are using Linux/*nix, or simply check "Remove my Firefox personal data and customizations" in the uninstaller if Windows is your OS of choice. Next step is to install FF back and set up your synchronizer. After it finishes getting your data from the server, you can settle your new browser: change preferences, install extensions etc. And most importantly, you can surf the web and enjoy the full speed of Firefox... until the next reinstall time comes.
